When Should You Book Your In-Home Newborn Photographer in Washington DC?
One of the most common questions expecting parents ask is when they should book their Washington DC newborn photographer. If you're expecting in Washington, DC, the short answer is that the best time to reserve your session is around your 20-week anatomy appointment.
Many families begin thinking about newborn photos once the nursery starts coming together and the pregnancy begins to feel more real. Booking around this time ensures that your photographer has space available around your due date and allows plenty of time to plan a relaxed and beautiful experience once your baby arrives.
Because newborn sessions are typically photographed within the first couple of weeks after birth, most newborn photographers only take a limited number of due dates each month. Reserving your session during pregnancy helps ensure that your photographer can accommodate your family during those fleeting early days at home with your baby.
Why Booking Early Matters
Newborn photography requires flexibility because babies arrive on their own timeline. Because of that, I reserve a limited number of newborn sessions each month so that every family has space once their baby arrives.
When you book your session during pregnancy, I hold your due date on my calendar. Once your baby is born, you simply reach out and we schedule the exact date for your session. Booking early ensures that I can accommodate your family and give you the time and attention your newborn session deserves.
The Best Age for Newborn Photos
The ideal time for newborn photographs is typically between 7 and 14 days old. During this stage babies tend to be extra sleepy and curl naturally into those cozy newborn positions. That said, I truly believe babies can be photographed beautifully at any age. Every baby is different, and there is always something special about documenting those early weeks as your family settles in together.
Why In-Home Newborn Sessions Are So Special
Your baby’s first home holds so much meaning. It is where you bring your newborn home for the very first time, where those first quiet cuddles happen, and where your family begins settling into this new rhythm together. Photographing your session in your home allows us to capture these early memories in a place that already holds so much emotion. The nursery you carefully prepared, the chair where you rock your baby in the middle of the night, the bed where everyone piles in together during those early days. These small details become part of your family’s story.
In-home newborn sessions are also incredibly gentle and easy on new parents. There is no need to pack a diaper bag, rush out the door, or worry about getting everyone somewhere on time with a brand new baby. Instead, I come to you, and everything unfolds naturally in the comfort of your own home. We simply use the rooms with the best natural light, often the bedroom, living room, or nursery. I will gently guide you into the most flattering light and help position everyone in a way that feels relaxed and natural.
The focus of these sessions is connection. Holding your baby close, siblings peeking in to see their new brother or sister, quiet moments between parents and their newborn. These are the memories that feel the most meaningful when you look back years from now.
What I Bring to Your Newborn Session
To keep things simple and timeless, I bring a large client wardrobe for your baby, with neutral outfits and different styles to choose from. I also bring soft swaddles and blankets that photograph beautifully and keep your baby cozy. My approach focuses on timeless, natural images that highlight connection between parents, siblings, and your new baby. I also send out a very detailed preparation guide before your session so parents know exactly what to expect and how to prepare their home for beautiful, relaxed photographs.
What to Expect During Your Session
Newborn sessions typically last about two hours, but we are not photographing the entire time. These early days with a newborn are naturally slower paced, and I always build in plenty of time for feeding, soothing your baby, diaper changes, or taking breaks if toddlers need a moment to regroup or have a snack.
My goal is for the session to feel calm and unhurried. There is no pressure for your baby to sleep the entire time, and we simply follow their lead throughout our time together. My sessions are mostly lifestyle focused, meaning we capture natural interactions between your family while I gently guide you into positions that feel comfortable and photograph beautifully. I will guide you into the best light in your home and offer small adjustments so you can simply focus on holding your baby and having fun together.
Often the most meaningful images come from the quiet in-between moments. A parent rocking their baby near a window, siblings snuggling on the bed, or the way your baby fits perfectly in your arms during those first days at home. Parents are often surprised by how relaxed these sessions feel. Because everything takes place in your own home, you can move at your baby’s pace, pause whenever needed, and simply enjoy your family.
Does My House Need to Be Perfect?
Absolutely not.
Your home does not need to look perfect or magazine-ready for your newborn session. These photographs are meant to capture this season of life as it truly is, and real homes are part of that story. All I ask is that you tidy the areas where we will be photographing, which is usually just one or two rooms such as the bedroom, living room, or nursery. A quick pick-up of surfaces and floors is more than enough.
What matters most is beautiful natural light and the connection between your family. I will guide you into the areas of your home with the best light and help arrange everyone in a way that feels natural and comfortable.
Many parents are surprised by how little space we actually need. Often a simple spot near a window or a cozy place on the bed becomes the perfect setting for your images. My goal is always to create photographs that feel relaxed, natural, and true to your family during these first days with your baby.
