What to Wear for Newborn Family Photos | DC & Northern Virginia Newborn PhotographeR
Preparing for a newborn session can feel like a lot, especially in those early weeks when life revolves around feedings, diapers, and very little sleep. As a DC newborn photographer and Northern Virginia newborn photographer, one of the biggest things I help my clients with is making the experience feel simple, calm, and completely stress-free.
You do not need to have everything perfectly figured out to have beautiful images. In fact, the goal is the opposite: to document this season in a natural, timeless way that feels like you.
A little planning ahead of time can make your session feel so much easier and help your final gallery feel cohesive and effortless. These are my go-to tips I share with families before every newborn session.
Choose Soft, Neutral Colors
If you are familiar with my work, you already know I gravitate toward soft, neutral tones. Creams, ivories, beige, soft browns, muted blues, dusty pinks, and gentle earthy colors always photograph beautifully and never distract from what matters most: your connection.
Neutral tones create a timeless look that will not feel dated years from now. They also tend to flatter every skin tone and photograph softly and naturally. Bright colors and bold patterns can pull attention away from emotion and connection, while neutrals allow everything to feel calm and cohesive.
Another bonus is that choosing a neutral palette makes coordinating outfits for the whole family so much easier. When everyone stays within similar tones, the images naturally feel polished and connected without looking overly styled.
Coordinate Instead of Matching
One of the most common questions I get as a Northern Virginia newborn photographer is whether families should match. My answer is always no. Coordinate instead. Coordinating creates more visual interest and depth in your images while still keeping everything cohesive. Instead of everyone wearing the exact same color, we build a palette where tones and textures complement each other naturally.
For example, if Mom is wearing a soft cream or floral dress, siblings can pull subtle colors from that palette. Variation in tone while staying within the same color family creates a more elevated and organic look. Matching outfits can sometimes feel flat or dated, while coordinating allows each person’s personality to shine through while still feeling connected as a family.
WHAT SHOULD DAD AND MOM WEAR?
For dads, I always recommend keeping things simple and comfortable. Neutral long pants paired with a fitted solid shirt, henley, or lightweight sweater always photograph beautifully during your newborn session. Avoid logos, bright colors, and busy patterns so the focus stays on connection rather than clothing. Simple, classic pieces also age much better and help your gallery feel timeless.
For moms, long dresses are my go-to because they photograph so beautifully and create soft, natural movement in images. They’re also especially flattering and comfortable during the postpartum season when comfort matters most.
If you prefer something more relaxed, a simple linen or knit lounge set also photographs beautifully and still keeps that soft, elevated feel. In general, long dresses and pants help create clean, uninterrupted lines in photos, allowing the eye to flow naturally through the image. This keeps everything feeling cohesive, timeless, and flattering without visually breaking the body into sections.
KEEP BABY’S OUTFIT SIMPLE
One of the sweetest things about newborn sessions is that your baby truly does not need much at all. In fact, the simpler, the better. Soft neutral onesies, swaddles, or minimal outfits without logos, graphics, or bright colors help keep the focus on your baby’s tiny details and the connection your family shares during this season. Newborns are also much more comfortable when they are kept cozy and simple, which helps the entire session flow more peacefully and naturally.

This is never about looking overly done or different from yourself. It is about helping you feel relaxed, confident, and cared for on a day that already has a lot going on.
So many moms tell me they almost did not step in front of the camera because they felt tired or not quite like themselves postpartum. Yet those are often the images they end up loving the most.
